A film & visual arts collective, aimed at demystifying the ‘doing’ and breaking down barriers to art.

The Film Liberation Project mixes film-making and visual arts with writing, theory, teaching & learning. Combining a large helping of DIY ethics, a healthy dose of kindness, superb taste in cinema and impeccable dress sense, we aim to be a creative community for anyone who wants it.

This is a place where ideas can grow into real things; collaborations can be born, expression nurtured, skills developed, stories told, experimentation encouraged and help can always be found. A real community attuned to creativity.

You know that intoxicating buzz of being with other creative people? and the endless benefits it has? …a place for that.

Films

These are a selection of stills from films made by participants of the Film Liberation Projects courses and workshops. They include everything from thrillers to documentaries, autobiographies to experimental pieces, made using phones, photos, animation and anything else to hand. We also produce works co-created together by Film Liberation participants and facilitators.

Learning

ATLA is a creative community. We are teachers, artists, researchers and community organisers with a passion for the necessity of collaboration. We believe that everyone has the potential and the right to imagine better futures, and to bring these into reality.

Unlike other film courses, we mix the theory of film with practical hands-on skills and techniques. We believe that understanding both sides is key to becoming a confident and effective filmmaker.

We know that getting into filmmaking can feel intimidating. Financial, logistical, and industry barriers often stand in the way. That’s why The Film Liberation Project exists – to break down those barriers and create a space where anyone can get involved. No matter where you’re coming from, you’re welcome here.

At The Film Liberation Project, we’re all about collaboration and creativity. Our approach is trans-disciplinary, transformational, collaborative, and sustainable. Our sessions are led by experienced filmmakers who don’t just teach – they learn and create alongside you in a collective exchange of knowledge and creativity. We work together in a supportive environment to learn, create, and redefine the boundaries of filmmaking.

From day one, you’ll be encouraged to try new things and step outside your comfort zone. Filmmaking is a journey, and we’re here to help you navigate it, no matter where you’re starting from.

At The Film Liberation Project, we love to watch, make, talk, learn and share everything about film. We are now opening our doors to our secret, members only film club… CINEMA 0, a monthly secret film club which mixes communal movie watching with learning, conversation and the chance to screen a film of your choice or find your new favourite film.
